Yep, that's right ...

Most martial artists have a poor understanding of how to take down their opponent. Many believe that simply kicking and punching will get them out of trouble...

But reality is that many fights result in a clinch very quickly, where it's difficult to punch and even harder to kick. At this point it would be particularly useful if you could unbalance your opponent so they can't overpower you and pummel you to a pulp.

This is where a knowledge of judo and jujitsu are handy. Leg sweeps, body throws, strangles and chokes are 3 very quick ways to end a volatile encounter.

How do I know?

Before I started karate 20 years ago, I studied judo for 2 years. And over the last 2 decades I've had half a dozen "encounters" you could say. Four of those situations resulted with my opponent on the ground or in a sleeper hold.

In the other 2 situations punches and kicks were thrown, but my opponent felt nothing due to being high on drugs and alcohol. That's quite a daunting feeling when you've hit with your best shot and they keep on coming.

Luckily one of the fights was interrupted by Police, while the other was very frightening which I spent 15 minutes trying to talk my way out of...

Contrast this type of situation to one where you can sweep, throw or strangle and it doesn't matter how high on drugs your opponent is, you can end it very quickly.

If your opponent can't stand and you can, it's difficult for them to win the fight...

If they can't breathe, it's difficult for them to win the fight...
